The Trump administration has approved a plan allowing Treasury officials connected to Elon Musk’s team limited access to the federal payment system, which processes trillions in government disbursements. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent authorized the move, permitting Tom Krause, CEO of Cloud Software Group and now a Treasury liaison to Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to have read-only access. Officials insist safeguards will prevent any changes to the system.
David Lebryk, a senior Treasury official, resigned after clashing with Trump appointees over the access decision. Democrats, including Sens. Ron Wyden and Elizabeth Warren, have raised concerns about political interference and potential misuse of sensitive financial data. Musk defended the move, claiming the DOGE team uncovered improper approvals of payments to fraudulent and terrorist-linked entities but provided no evidence.
Government reports estimate federal agencies lose up to $521 billion annually due to fraud, with improper payments surging during pandemic relief efforts.
