The Trump administration announced Thursday that it will terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians, stripping deportation protections from approximately 520,000 people. The decision, made by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, reverses the Biden administration’s renewal of TPS for Haiti and follows a similar move rescinding protections for Venezuelans.

“For decades, the TPS system has been exploited and abused,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated, arguing that the program, originally intended as temporary relief, had become a long-term residency pathway. TPS for Haiti was first granted in 2010 following a devastating earthquake and was extended multiple times, including after the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse.

The move is expected to face legal challenges, with immigration advocates arguing DHS lacks the authority to unilaterally revoke an existing TPS designation. The National TPS Alliance has already sued the administration over the Venezuelan TPS rollback, claiming DHS is ignoring procedural requirements set by law.
