The Trump administration plans to eliminate funding for climate and weather research at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), according to a newly released budget document. The proposal targets NOAA’s climate labs, regional data centers, weather research programs, and severe storm research, including labs in Mauna Loa and Miami.

The budget also calls for cutting 2,061 full-time NOAA positions—a 17% reduction from fiscal 2024—and shutting down several key climate monitoring facilities. This follows a broader effort by Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to reduce staffing in areas deemed misaligned with administration priorities.

The proposed cuts include NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, which conducts much of the agency’s climate work. While presidential budget requests are not binding, they reflect policy goals and influence agency operations.

The move aligns with Trump’s continued efforts to downplay climate change and dismantle environmental programs, despite opposition from the scientific community and ongoing extreme weather challenges.
