President Donald Trump on Friday accused China of violating a recent trade truce, reigniting tensions just weeks after the two countries agreed to a temporary de-escalation. The 90-day pact, brokered in Switzerland and announced May 12, lowered U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30% and was seen as a shift from near-total embargo to restricted trade.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump claimed, “China… HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US,” adding, “So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!”
The remarks came one day after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News that trade talks with Beijing were “a bit stalled.” Markets reacted immediately—S&P 500 futures fell 0.5% after Trump’s post, despite having gained 5% since the original deal was signed.
Trump’s latest outburst follows a federal court ruling this week that deemed his prior China tariffs unlawful. Though the ruling is currently stayed, it casts further uncertainty on his trade agenda.
The Chinese embassy has not responded to requests for comment. The reduced tariffs are scheduled to remain in effect through August 12.
