Palm Beach, Florida — As negotiations over the war in Ukraine remain fragile, President Donald Trump publicly aligned himself with Russian claims that Ukraine attempted to target President Vladimir Putin’s residence, despite firm denials from Kyiv and a lack of independent verification.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov alleged that Ukrainian forces launched 91 long-range drones toward Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region, claiming Russian air defenses intercepted all of them without damage or injuries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the accusation, calling it a fabrication intended to justify additional Russian strikes and undermine peace efforts.
Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump said he was angered by the alleged incident and stated that Putin personally informed him of the attack during an early-morning call. Trump acknowledged uncertainty over the facts but emphasized that, if true, such an action would be ill-timed given ongoing talks. The remarks marked a notable moment in which Trump appeared to credit Moscow’s narrative over Ukraine’s denial.
The White House later confirmed the call between Trump and Putin, describing it as “positive” and focused on Ukraine. Russian officials, meanwhile, warned that retaliation plans were already in place, reinforcing fears that the claim could be used to justify further military escalation.
The comments came a day after Trump and Zelensky met for several hours in Florida, with both leaders signaling progress toward a potential agreement, though key territorial disputes remain unresolved.
