Authorities in South Carolina arrested 19-year-old Samuel Theodore Cain of Greenville on Thursday for allegedly threatening to assassinate Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC). Cain, a biological male who identifies as transgender, was charged with threatening the life of a public official — a felony carrying a penalty of up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
The threat, made in an April 26 post on X under the username “raystr1ker,” read: “I’M GOING TO ASSASSINATE REPRESENTATIVE NANCY MACE WITH A GUN.” Cain later deleted the account, claiming fear of being “doxxed and murdered.” The arrest warrant was signed May 12, and Cain is now in custody at the Greenville County Detention Center.
Rep. Mace blamed the “trans movement” for inciting violence and thanked Capitol Police and South Carolina’s SLED for acting quickly. She has previously faced threats since introducing legislation in 2024 to restrict bathroom use based on biological sex.
Federal prosecutors declined to pursue the case; it will be handled by the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
