Two major labor leaders have left the Democratic National Committee (DNC), citing deep disagreements with party leadership. Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, resigned in a June 5 letter saying she felt “out of step” with the direction of DNC Chair Ken Martin. Weingarten criticized the party for failing to expand its outreach and “enlarge the tent.”

Lee Saunders, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), declined renomination weeks ago, urging a renewed strategy to match the urgency of the times. Their unions represent over 3 million workers combined.

Both Weingarten and Saunders had supported Ben Wikler over Martin in this year’s DNC chair election. Their departures follow a separate controversy involving activist David Hogg, whose brief vice chair tenure ended after a disputed vote and internal resistance to his support for primary challenges against sitting Democrats.

DNC Labor Council Chair Stuart Applebaum defended Martin’s leadership, emphasizing efforts to strengthen and diversify the party.
