Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, according to a CNN report citing four sources. Walz is expected to join Harris at a Philadelphia rally before touring swing states.
Polls indicate that while Walz is less known than former President Donald Trump’s pick, Republican Ohio Senator JD Vance, he is viewed more favorably. A Marist poll found 71% of Americans are unfamiliar with Walz, but 17% view him favorably and 12% unfavorably. In contrast, Vance has a 34% favorable and 43% unfavorable rating.
Supporters believe Walz can strengthen Harris’ appeal in the Midwest and Rust Belt without alienating progressives. Though Minnesota leans Democratic, his popularity could resonate in battleground states.
Polls from Marist, YouGov/The Economist, and Reuters/Ipsos highlight Walz’s favorable perception compared to Vance’s higher unfavorable ratings. More national polls are expected as the campaign progresses.
