Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) announced Saturday he will oppose both the motion to proceed and final passage of the Senate GOP megabill advancing President Trump’s agenda, citing deep cuts to Medicaid. Tillis criticized a provision lowering the cap on healthcare provider taxes and urged leaders to return to the House-passed version, which makes smaller reductions.

“Oh no. The data hasn’t changed so I got to vote no,” Tillis said after meeting with GOP colleagues. His stance follows similar opposition from Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Ron Johnson (R-WI), jeopardizing the bill’s passage.

With a 53-seat majority, Republicans can only afford three defections. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) supported beginning debate but isn’t committed to the final vote.

Trump responded on Truth Social, slamming Tillis for grandstanding and warning he may back a primary challenger in 2026. “Tillis is making a big mistake,” he posted.

The Senate bill proposes deeper Medicaid funding cuts than the House version and raises the debt ceiling by $5 trillion—key reasons cited by Paul and Johnson for their opposition.
