The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, is now focusing on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), with thousands of probationary workers expected to be laid off during tax season. The layoffs could begin this week, following a visit by DOGE staff to IRS headquarters.
President Donald Trump praised DOGE’s efforts, stating, “They’re doing a hell of a job… It’s an amazing job they’re doing.” The administration argues that DOGE is cutting wasteful government spending, though many claims remain unverified.
Critics warn that DOGE’s actions pose security risks and disrupt essential government functions. Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) accused Musk of applying a “corporate slash and burn technique” that could harm national security.
A federal judge has temporarily blocked DOGE from accessing U.S. Treasury Department data, following a lawsuit from 19 states warning that Musk’s involvement could be used to withhold funds from political opponents. The IRS and Treasury Department have yet to respond publicly.
