Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) has ordered state flags to be raised to full-staff on Jan. 20 for President-elect Trump’s inauguration, despite President Biden’s national 30-day half-staff order honoring the late President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Dec. 29 at age 100.
In a statement, Abbott praised Carter’s legacy, saying, “Texas continues to mourn… President Carter’s steadfast leadership.” However, he emphasized the need to celebrate the peaceful transfer of power, stating, “As we usher in this new era of leadership… all flags will be raised to full-staff at the Texas Capitol and all state buildings.”
Trump criticized Democrats for “giddy” reactions to the flag controversy, claiming they were politicizing national symbols. Following Carter’s death, Trump acknowledged their differences but respected Carter’s patriotism.
National flags will remain at half-staff until Jan. 28 per Biden’s order.
