The Texas National Guard has been authorized to make immigration arrests under a new agreement between the Trump administration and the state, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Sunday. The directive, effective immediately, is part of President Trump’s broader immigration crackdown.
The agreement with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) increases personnel for border enforcement. Under the deal, National Guard soldiers can conduct roving patrols and act as immigration agents, provided they are accompanied by a CBP officer. CBP Acting Commissioner Pete Flores signed the memorandum, though it has yet to be distributed across Texas border sectors.
This move follows a Department of Homeland Security directive expanding immigration enforcement powers to U.S. Marshals, the DEA, ATF, and the Bureau of Prisons. Meanwhile, the ACLU is challenging Trump’s effort to expand fast-track deportations, arguing it violates due process rights.
