Texas Governor Greg Abbott responded to the Democratic ticket shake-up with threats to intensify border operations. “Joe Biden has now endorsed and fully supports his ‘Borders Czar’ Kamala Harris to be the Democrat candidate for president,” Abbott wrote on X. “I think I will need to triple the border wall, razor wire barriers, and National Guard on the border.”

Abbott, alongside other Trump allies, criticized Harris, often inaccurately referring to her as a “border czar.” Since 2021, Abbott’s campaign to bolster border enforcement has cost Texas over $11 billion, with an additional $5 billion approved recently.

Harris has faced criticism from both conservatives and progressives, the latter due to a 2021 speech advising potential migrants not to come to the U.S.-Mexico border. Additionally, Texas leaders have baselessly claimed left-wing Democrats forced Biden out to install a more pliable candidate, with Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick alleging former President Obama’s influence.

Amid this political turmoil, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz faces a well-funded challenge from Rep. Colin Allred, who outraised Cruz in the second quarter of 2024.
