Texas Governor Greg Abbott has criticized and defied President Joe Biden’s new asylum proposal, amidst ongoing tensions over the U.S.-Mexico border. Texas has been significantly impacted by the surge of migrants crossing illegally into the U.S. in recent years. Abbott has implemented deterrence tactics, such as installing razor wire along the border and busing migrants to sanctuary cities.

Biden’s proposal, unveiled on Thursday, aims to expedite the asylum claims process for certain migrants, including those with prior criminal convictions. The proposal has been met with bipartisan criticism, as the U.S. continues to experience a high number of migrant border crossings.

In response to Biden’s proposal, Abbott, a vocal critic of Biden’s immigration policies, expressed his defiance on social media. He argued that Biden’s proposals are minimal and merely mask the crisis he created. Abbott claimed that Texas’ efforts have led to a decline in illegal crossings, while other states have seen an increase.

Abbott further stated that Biden’s proposals will not reduce the number of migrant crossings. He cited Operation Lone Star, a Texas initiative involving the construction of razor wire along the border and placement of floating buoys in the Rio Grande, as having led to a substantial decline in illegal immigration.

However, Operation Lone Star has also faced criticism due to environmental and humanitarian concerns raised by the federal government. Despite this, Abbott maintains that the operation is working and suggests that Biden should follow Texas’ lead or step aside.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) supports the new proposals, stating they will help identify and remove individuals who present a security risk more quickly. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas affirmed the proposed rule as a step towards ensuring the safety of the American public.
