European sales of Tesla vehicles fell 49% year-over-year in April, selling just 7,261 cars, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). The steep decline comes as overall battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Europe grew 34.1% in the same period.
The drop is attributed to growing competition and reputational damage linked to CEO Elon Musk’s political alignment with President Donald Trump. Tesla dealerships across Europe saw protests in March over Musk’s involvement with the Trump administration and his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Musk has said he plans to reduce time spent on government duties but will continue dedicating “a day or two per week” to it. He recently reaffirmed his commitment to lead Tesla for the next five years.
Tesla’s aging vehicle lineup, lack of hybrid models, and stiff competition from automakers like BYD have compounded its challenges. For the first time, BYD outsold Tesla in European pure electric car sales.
Hybrids now account for over 35% of the European car market—an area where Tesla does not compete. Year-to-date, Tesla sales in Europe are down nearly 40%.
