Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) expressed frustration with the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), a super PAC tied to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, for not providing financial support in his close reelection race against Democratic Rep. Colin Allred. Cruz accused McConnell of using the fund to “punish” GOP critics, claiming the SLF has not contributed “a penny” to his campaign. He made similar accusations regarding his 2018 race against Beto O’Rourke, where he was outspent 3-to-1 and received no help from McConnell’s PAC.
Cruz argued that McConnell and the SLF have a history of withholding support from senators who challenge McConnell’s leadership, citing past races involving Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah). However, SLF records show it spent $2 million on Johnson’s 2016 race and $26 million on his 2022 reelection. SLF CEO Steven Law stated that the group expects Cruz and Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) to prevail without significant outside support.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) has announced a multimillion-dollar ad campaign targeting Cruz, though it is not expected to spend heavily in Texas.
