A suspect arrested in connection with the arson at the Pennsylvania governor’s residence allegedly used Molotov cocktails and expressed intentions to assault Governor Josh Shapiro (D), according to a criminal complaint filed by Pennsylvania State Police.
The suspect, Cody Balmer, reportedly told police he “would have beaten” Gov. Shapiro with a hammer if he had encountered him inside the residence. Authorities also stated Balmer admitted to harboring hatred toward the governor.
Dauphin County District Attorney Francis Chardo said the attack was captured on surveillance footage and confirmed that multiple Molotov cocktails were used. Shapiro and his family were inside the Harrisburg home at the time but were safely evacuated. The fire caused substantial damage.
Vice President JD Vance and Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the attack. Vance called it “really disgusting violence,” while Bondi praised law enforcement for the swift arrest.
Balmer remains in custody, and further charges are expected.
