The Supreme Court has rejected Steve Bannon’s attempt to avoid prison following his contempt of Congress convictions. In a brief ruling on Friday, the court ordered Donald Trump’s former adviser to report to prison by Monday. Bannon had defied subpoenas from the House’s January 6 insurrection investigation, leading to his convictions in July 2022 on two counts of contempt of Congress and a subsequent four-month prison sentence in October 2022.

Federal prosecutors argued that Bannon acted as if he was “above the law” by refusing a deposition and withholding documents related to his efforts to subvert the 2020 election results. Bannon’s lawyer, David Schoen, claimed the convictions were politically motivated and raised “serious constitutional issues” that the Supreme Court should investigate. However, the court denied Bannon’s emergency application to delay his sentence, emphasizing the importance of upholding Congress’s authority.
