MAGA insider Steve Bannon called on Donald Trump to investigate and deport Elon Musk on Thursday, claiming the South African-born billionaire may be in the U.S. illegally. The demand followed a public blowup between Musk and Trump over the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” with both figures exchanging insults online.
“They should initiate a formal investigation of his immigration status,” Bannon told The New York Times, adding, “I am of the strong belief that he is an illegal alien.”
On his “War Room” webcast, Bannon escalated the rhetoric: “Elon Musk is illegal, and he’s got to go.”
Musk, a top Trump donor with an estimated $250 million contributed to the 2024 campaign, moved from South Africa to Canada before eventually becoming a U.S. citizen. A 2023 Washington Post report questioned the legality of Musk’s early employment in the country.
Bannon also cited Musk’s alleged drug use, including ketamine, as further grounds for investigation and praised Trump’s call to revoke Musk’s federal contracts.
“President Trump empowered him… and now he’s turned,” Bannon said. “He’s not with us. He’s totally incompetent.”
