The U.S. State Department designated several Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations Wednesday, fulfilling a campaign promise by President Donald Trump. The move, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, applies to groups including the Sinaloa Cartel, Jalisco Nueva Generación, and MS-13.

Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and a senior Trump adviser, suggested drone strikes as a potential response. “That means they’re eligible for drone strikes,” Musk posted on X.

The designation escalates Trump’s crackdown on cartels and border security. While Trump has threatened tariffs on Mexican goods, he has agreed to delay them for a month as 10,000 Mexican soldiers deploy to the U.S. border. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum warned that direct U.S. military action would violate Mexico’s sovereignty.

Reports indicate Trump previously inquired about missile strikes on cartels during his first term but was dissuaded by military officials. It remains unclear what penalties the designated groups will face.
