Special counsel Jack Smith filed a new motion asking Judge Aileen Cannon to block former President Trump from making public statements that could endanger law enforcement in his classified documents case. This request follows Trump’s false claims that the Biden administration intended to use deadly force during the 2022 Mar-a-Lago search.
Smith argues that Trump’s mischaracterizations have endangered law enforcement officers and compromised the integrity of the proceedings. Trump recently claimed Biden was “locked & loaded and ready to take me out,” distorting the standard language in search documents. The filing notes that the FBI conducted the search while Trump and his family were out of town, adhering to standard procedures.
Judge Cannon had previously denied Smith’s first request, criticizing the prosecutors for not consulting Trump’s attorneys. In the latest filing, Smith included proof of discussions with the defense. Trump’s legal team rejected the motion, citing it as a violation of First Amendment rights. Smith emphasized the need to prevent similar inflammatory statements to protect law enforcement officers and uphold the legal process.
