Washington, D.C. — Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger delivered the Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night, criticizing the administration’s economic and immigration policies.

Spanberger argued that Trump’s tariff policies have increased costs for American households and hurt small businesses, claiming they have cost families more than $1,700. She also criticized the “One Big, Beautiful Bill Act,” saying it threatens rural hospitals and increases costs for health care, energy and housing while cutting food assistance programs.

On immigration, Spanberger said the system needs reform but warned against what she described as unaccountable enforcement actions. She referenced the deaths of two U.S. citizens in Minnesota involving federal agents earlier this year.

The governor also took aim at Trump’s Cabinet appointments, accused the administration of empowering foreign adversaries, and mentioned the Justice Department’s release of Jeffrey Epstein-related files.

Spanberger highlighted recent Democratic election victories and called for unity as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, urging Americans to “demand more” from their leaders.
