South Africa’s Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on Friday accused President Trump of twisting facts to promote a false “genocide” narrative involving white farmers. The claim stems from a video shown during a White House meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, where Trump described crosses lining a rural road as “burial sites” for over 1,000 murdered white farmers.
Mchunu clarified the crosses were part of a temporary 2020 memorial during a funeral for a white couple killed in a farm robbery. The display was symbolic, honoring both Black and white farmers and farmworkers killed over decades.
“There is no genocide. These are not graves,” Mchunu said, accusing Trump of misrepresenting the memorial to support his narrative that white farmers are being systematically targeted and dispossessed.
Trump recently signed an executive order cutting aid to South Africa, accusing the government of persecuting white landowners and siding with Hamas by pursuing Israel for genocide at the International Court of Justice.
The White House has not responded to South Africa’s remarks.
