A bipartisan group of senators voted 51–48 Wednesday to approve a resolution condemning President Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian imports. While symbolic, the vote represents a significant rebuke of Trump’s trade policy from within his own party.

Four Republican senators—Rand Paul (KY), Susan Collins (ME), Lisa Murkowski (AK), and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (KY)—joined all Democrats in backing the measure. The resolution was introduced just hours after Trump unveiled sweeping new tariffs, including a 10% baseline on all imports and steep reciprocal tariffs on dozens of nations.

Collins and McConnell criticized the tariffs as harmful to U.S. allies, with Collins warning of the economic damage to Maine’s industries and McConnell calling tariffs “a tax on everyday working Americans.” Paul said the tariffs bypass Congress and hurt trade-dependent industries in Kentucky.

Trump responded on Truth Social, accusing his critics of undermining efforts to curb fentanyl trafficking from Canada. Still, senators from both parties said the resolution sends a clear signal to de-escalate Trump’s trade war.
