Senate Republicans narrowly passed Donald Trump‘s sweeping “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” on Tuesday, after a 24-hour debate and a tie-breaking vote by Vice President JD Vance. The legislation advances Trump’s push for a major tax and spending package before the July 4 deadline, despite intraparty rifts.
The bill makes permanent the 2017 Trump tax cuts and allocates $350 billion for border security, funded partly by immigrant fees. It also slashes $1.2 trillion in spending—mostly from Medicaid and food assistance—by tightening work requirements and eligibility rules.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill would add $3.3 trillion to the federal deficit over 10 years and increase the number of uninsured Americans by 11.8 million by 2034.
The bill now heads back to the House, where proposed Medicaid cuts and lingering GOP disputes could derail or reshape the legislation. Fiscal conservatives and Democrats remain critical of the deficit impact and potential harm to low-income Americans.
