Senator Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) introduced a bill aiming to eliminate the federal Department of Education, a move backed by President-elect Donald Trump. The legislation proposes transferring key education programs to other federal departments, aligning with long-standing Republican goals.

“The federal Department of Education has never educated a single student. It’s long past time to end this bureaucratic department,” Rounds said, noting his enthusiasm to work with Trump and the incoming GOP-led Congress to enact the measure.

Though unlikely to pass in the current Democratic-controlled Senate, Republicans are set to take control in January, creating an opportunity to advance the plan. Trump, who advocated for the department’s removal during his first term, has reaffirmed his support, recently nominating Linda McMahon to lead the agency.
