Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said Sunday he would support an investigation into President Trump’s firing of Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, following accusations she manipulated job numbers to aid Democrats.
“I think an investigation is certainly in order,” Padilla said on Meet the Press. He also referenced Trump’s broader pattern of politicizing federal agencies, saying, “He’s trying to weaponize the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”
Trump ousted McEntarfer on Friday after the agency released revised data showing 258,000 fewer jobs created in May and June than initially reported. Trump accused her of inflating job numbers ahead of the 2024 election to boost former Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign.
Padilla called the move “a reflection of their insecurity about the economy,” and cited rising prices and tariffs under Trump as major concerns. “That’s the reality of tariffs — $2,400 a year for working families,” he added.
McEntarfer, a Biden appointee confirmed with bipartisan Senate support, has not commented publicly.
