Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) is under fire from both Democrats and Republicans after making social media posts linking the Minnesota shooting of two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses to “Marxism.” Lee claimed the violence occurred “when Marxists don’t get their way” and shared an image of the suspect alongside the phrase “Nightmare on Waltz Street,” a jab at Gov. Tim Walz.
The remarks drew swift condemnation from Minnesota officials, including Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, who said Lee’s comments fueled hate and misinformation. Smith confronted Lee in person, calling his remarks “brutal and cruel.” Even GOP lawmakers like Minnesota Rep. Walter Hudson criticized Lee’s posts as inappropriate.
The suspect, Vance Boelter, is charged with murdering Rep. Melissa Hortman and wounding Sen. John Hoffman. Authorities say he had a hit list targeting Democrats and abortion clinics. Critics note Boelter was a Trump voter, countering Lee’s partisan implication.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urged Lee to apologize, calling the remarks “reckless” and beneath his office.
