Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) deleted posts from his personal X account Tuesday after facing bipartisan criticism for remarks that appeared to blame the political left for the fatal shooting of Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband. State Sen. John Hoffman (D) and his wife were also injured in a related attack.
One post referred to the killings as “Nightmare on Waltz Street,” a pun on Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), while another declared, “This is what happens When Marxists don’t get their way,” alongside a photo of alleged shooter Vance Boelter.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the posts “disgusting” and urged President Donald Trump and other Republicans to denounce them. Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN), a close friend of Hortman, confronted Lee in person, saying he appeared surprised but offered few words in response.
Lee did not answer questions about the posts on Monday and has not issued a public statement.
