Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has been labeled an “extremist and terrorist” by Russia, a move announced by Russian state media and confirmed by Rosfinmonitoring, Russia’s state financial watchdog. This designation comes shortly after Graham publicly suggested the U.S. should classify Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism in response to the death of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny. Graham attributed Navalny’s death directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing his views on CBS’ “Face the Nation” and calling Navalny “one of the bravest people I ever met.”
Graham’s remarks echoed a stance he shares with President Joe Biden, advocating for significant repercussions for Russia following Navalny’s death. Navalny, a prominent critic of Putin, died in prison under circumstances that have drawn international condemnation. His death, occurring a month before Russia’s presidential election, demonstrates the ongoing risks faced by Putin’s opponents.
This incident further strains U.S.-Russia relations, with Graham joining other U.S. figures, including journalists Tom Rogan and Hugo Gurdon of the Washington Examiner, on Russia’s list of “extremists and terrorists.”
