Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) proposed Sunday that all presidential nominees and politicians in the line of succession undergo cognitive exams, including Donald Trump. Speaking on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Graham emphasized the national security implications, especially given concerns about President Joe Biden’s health following a poor debate performance against Trump. Graham argued that competency tests are crucial to ensure those in leadership are capable under dire circumstances.
Graham expressed concerns over Biden’s ability, highlighting the potential risks posed by a weakened commander in chief. Biden’s debate struggles have intensified these worries, despite Biden attributing his performance to exhaustion, a cold, and inadequate preparation during an interview with ABC News.
Graham’s proposal extends to Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and other key figures. He cited the example of Strom Thurmond, a former senator approaching 100 years old, as a precedent for the need for such exams. Graham stressed the importance of evaluating all potential leaders to maintain confidence in their ability to govern effectively.
