Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) is reshaping his stance on abortion amid speculation that he could be tapped as former President Trump’s running mate. Previously, Vance supported the overturning of Roe v. Wade and strict abortion bans, including those without exceptions for rape and incest, stating, “Two wrongs don’t make a right” in 2021.

However, Vance has recently aligned more with Trump’s position, advocating for state-level decisions on abortion and supporting exceptions for rape, incest, and the mother’s life. In a July 7 interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Vance called Trump a “pragmatic leader” for his approach.

Vance also expressed support for mifepristone access, referencing Trump’s agreement with the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the medication. This shift mirrors the broader GOP struggle to unify its abortion messaging post-Roe.

Ohio Republican strategist Mark Weaver noted, “The entire Republican Party is adjusting its messaging in a post-Roe world,” highlighting Vance’s positioning as a potential VP pick while reflecting the party’s evolving stance on abortion.
