Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on Tuesday after criticism following an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Cheatle called the attempt “the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades.”
“I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” Cheatle said in her resignation email to staff, reported by the Associated Press. The incident, which occurred at Trump’s July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, led to intense scrutiny from both Republicans and Democrats.
At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Cheatle was confronted by GOP senators demanding answers. Trump’s campaign manager and top Democrats, including Rep. Jamie Raskin and Rep. James Comer, also called for her resignation. Comer described her resignation as “a step toward accountability.”
President Joe Biden, who appointed Cheatle in 2022, praised her decades of public service and announced an independent review into the assassination attempt. Biden said he will name a new director soon.
The Secret Service has faced multiple scandals in recent years, but this incident is unprecedented. Corey Comperator, a former fire chief, was killed, and two others were injured in the shooting. Trump, who sustained a gunshot wound to his ear, described the experience as “too painful to tell.” Multiple investigations, including a bipartisan task force, are underway.
