Washington, DC — The U.S. Secret Service has investigated about 10,000 threats against the people it protects so far this year, with cases involving full-time protectees up more than 40% from 2025.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran told CBS News that the agency has not seen an increase like this before. Curran, who has worked for the Secret Service for 25 years, was one of the agents protecting Donald Trump during the 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, when Trump was wounded and Corey Comperatore was killed.
Curran pointed to the internet and social media as factors making public officials more accessible, which may be driving the increase in threats. Deputy Director Matthew Quinn also mentioned mental health issues and political hostility as contributing factors.
When asked if most threats come from the political left or right, Curran did not specify, saying the Secret Service investigates threats regardless of political motivation.
Research from the Center for Strategic and International Studies found that in 2025, left-wing attacks and plots briefly outnumbered those from the far right. However, left-wing violence has been much less deadly over time. CSIS also notes that election-related political violence has come from several ideological directions.
The Secret Service also faces new security challenges, including the use of weaponized drones, as the overall threat environment grows.
