Four current and former Seattle police officers who attended the January 6, 2021, “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington, D.C., are petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court to keep their identities concealed in court records.
Using pseudonyms as “John Doe,” the officers argue that revealing their names would violate their right to privacy and create a chilling effect on expressing political views. They filed the petition after the Washington State Supreme Court ruled in February that their identities could be made public, rejecting their claims under the state’s public records law.
The Seattle Police Department previously investigated whether any officers violated laws or department policy by attending the rally. Two officers, Caitlin and Alexander Everett, were found to have crossed police barriers and were fired. Three others were cleared, while a fourth case was inconclusive.
The petition claims that disclosing their names could lead to vilification despite no proven misconduct. Attorneys for law student Sam Sueoka, who requested the records, said they are reviewing the motion.
