Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) plans to bring back a bill to protect access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, which Senate Republicans blocked in June. The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), would establish a nationwide right to IVF, requiring insurance companies to cover fertility treatments and authorizing the Department of Justice to protect individuals’ rights to receive these procedures.
Schumer criticized Republicans for blocking the bill, highlighting the contradiction of claiming to support pro-family policies while opposing federal protections for IVF. Only two Republicans, Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), voted to advance the bill in June.
The bill, which previously received 48 votes, is seen as a key health care issue for Democrats, especially in the 2024 election cycle. Schumer aims to keep the focus on women’s access to health care, a top priority for many Democratic candidates.
