Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday that Democrats will oppose any request from President Trump to extend federal control over Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and National Guard deployment beyond the current 30-day limit.
Trump can unilaterally direct the MPD for up to 30 days under the Home Rule Act, but any extension requires congressional approval. “No f—ing way,” Schumer told host Aaron Parnas, adding, “We’ll fight him tooth and nail.” He suggested some Republicans may also oppose the move and linked Trump’s actions to efforts to avoid scrutiny over the release of Jeffrey Epstein-related files.
Trump said he is seeking a “long-term extension” and may push a D.C.-focused crime bill as a model for other cities. Both Maryland Democratic senators, Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin, also said they will oppose extending federal control.
Van Hollen warned the action is “a dress rehearsal for going after others around the country” and should end when the 30-day period expires.
