Newly revealed footage from January 6, 2021, shows Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) berating Trump administration officials over former President Trump’s refusal to order the National Guard to disperse Capitol rioters. As Congress members were evacuated to Fort McNair, Schumer was seen on video, aired by MSNBC on Monday, angrily questioning then-Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy about the National Guard’s absence.
“D.C. has requested the National Guard, and it’s been denied by DOD. I’d like to know a good f—ing reason why it’s been denied,” Schumer said. He later pushed then-acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller and acting Attorney General Jeff Rosen to urge Trump to tell rioters to leave the Capitol.
Trump falsely claimed he ordered the Guard but was stopped by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. This claim was refuted under oath by Trump’s Cabinet members. Special counsel Jack Smith’s criminal investigation into Trump’s actions on and around January 6 includes charges of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) highlighted the insurrection’s significance, reminding viewers of its threat to democracy.
