Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced Thursday that he will support a Republican-backed government funding bill, drawing fierce backlash from fellow Democrats who argue it hands too much power to President Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
The six-month continuing resolution (CR) needs eight Democratic votes to overcome a Senate filibuster before the Friday night shutdown deadline. Schumer’s endorsement may encourage others to back the bill, but many Democrats remain opposed.
Progressive lawmakers slammed the move, calling the bill a “slush fund for Trump and Musk” and warning that it enables further dismantling of the federal government. Sens. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Jon Ossoff (D-GA), and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) cited cuts to infrastructure, education, and social programs as reasons for their opposition.
Schumer defended his decision, arguing that while the GOP bill is flawed, a shutdown would be far worse, potentially allowing Trump to seize even more control over federal agencies.
With Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) opposing the bill, passage remains uncertain despite Republican control of 53 Senate seats.
