WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) will boycott President Donald Trump’s upcoming State of the Union address and instead speak at an alternative event on the National Mall.

The progressive outlet MeidasTouch reported that Schiff is scheduled to appear at a rally titled the “People’s State of the Union,” organized alongside MoveOn Civic Action. The event will feature several Democratic lawmakers, including Sens. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Tina Smith (D-Minn.), as well as multiple House members.

The counterprogramming comes as some Democrats protest Trump’s Feb. 24 address, his first since returning to office. Another event, dubbed the “State of the Swamp,” is planned at the National Press Club the same evening.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said members could attend the speech in “silent defiance” or participate in alternative events around the Capitol. Last year’s address included visible Democratic protests, including signs reading “False” and “Save Medicaid,” and a disruption by Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) that led to his censure.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) urged colleagues to maintain decorum, saying public disruptions diminish “dignity” and respect for the office.

Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) is expected to deliver the Democratic response.
