Former New York Republican congressman George Santos, who was seen in the House chamber before the State of the Union address, has raised doubts about his plans to return to Congress. His new campaign committee reported no fundraising or activity in March.
Santos announced plans last month to challenge Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.) in the primary. However, he did not qualify for the GOP primary in June, though he could potentially run as an independent. LaLota, who represents a district further up Long Island than Santos’ previous district, was among the Republicans who advocated for Santos’ expulsion from Congress following his indictment on nearly two dozen charges.
A report filed with the Federal Election Commission revealed that Santos’ new campaign committee has not yet initiated any campaign operations, as it reported no fundraising or spending. Santos’ previous campaign committee continues to report significant debt and has only received a few small donations while refunding $21,000 to donors.
Santos’ campaign committee is a source of his legal troubles. He is accused of falsifying personal loans to the campaign and charging donors’ credit cards without their consent. Santos has denied all charges.
