Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) criticized President Donald Trump Sunday over his deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to the Los Angeles area in response to protests against recent ICE raids. Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union, Sanders said Trump “does not believe in the Constitution” and is acting unilaterally.

“My understanding is that the governor of California, the mayor of the city of Los Angeles, did not request the National Guard,” Sanders told Dana Bash. “But he thinks he has a right to do anything he wants.”

The protests erupted after ICE arrested 45 individuals last week. The White House called the demonstrations violent and said federal officers had been attacked. “These operations are essential to halting and reversing the invasion of illegal criminals,” said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, defending the decision.

Gov. Gavin Newsom called the deployment “inflammatory” and warned it would “erode public trust.” Rep. Nanette Barragán (D-Calif.) said Sunday the move “is going to escalate the situation.”

Trump has defended the deployment as necessary, blaming California’s “feckless Democrat leaders” for allowing unrest to “fester.”
