Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered the State Department to cease public commentary on the fairness and legitimacy of foreign elections, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. The directive ends a longstanding bipartisan policy of promoting democratic norms and competitive elections abroad.

Since the Cold War, both Republican and Democratic administrations have routinely issued statements critiquing or supporting the conduct of elections in other countries. The new policy, however, signals that the United States will reduce its emphasis on encouraging internal reforms within foreign governments, such as safeguarding electoral integrity.

The move reflects a broader recalibration of American foreign policy under Rubio’s leadership, one that prioritizes strategic interests over democracy promotion. The Journal notes the shift is partly intended to reduce friction with foreign governments that view U.S. election commentary as intrusive or politically motivated.

Critics warn the change could embolden authoritarian regimes and undermine global democratic norms. Supporters argue it aligns U.S. diplomacy more closely with national self-interest and reduces perceptions of hypocrisy.
