WASHINGTON, D.C. — Secretary of State Marco Rubio forcefully defended President Donald Trump’s energy level and cognitive health during a House Foreign Relations Committee hearing Wednesday after a Democratic lawmaker questioned whether the president has fallen asleep during official meetings.
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) asked Rubio whether he had ever witnessed Trump sleeping during a Cabinet meeting. Rubio dismissed the suggestion, stating he had never seen the president fall asleep and instead described Trump as someone who works unusually long hours.
“I’ve never seen him fall asleep,” Rubio told lawmakers. “On the contrary, the guy doesn’t sleep.” Rubio added that Trump frequently contacts him during overnight and early morning hours, citing calls at 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. as examples of the president’s demanding schedule.
Lieu challenged Rubio’s characterization by displaying video clips that appeared to show Trump with his eyes closed during public appearances, including a Cabinet meeting and a Memorial Day ceremony. The California congressman suggested such moments could raise concerns about the president’s health and how he is perceived by foreign adversaries.
Rubio rejected those concerns, calling questions about Trump’s cognitive ability “absurd.” He pointed to international trips where, according to Rubio, Trump remained active while others were sleeping.
The exchange reflects ongoing political disputes over the health and fitness of national leaders, an issue that has frequently surfaced in recent election cycles. Trump has previously responded to similar criticisms by saying that Cabinet meetings can be “boring” and denying that closing his eyes is evidence of any health problem.
The hearing focused primarily on foreign policy issues but briefly turned into a sharp partisan debate over the president’s condition and public image.
