Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) predicted on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), the Vice President-elect, will be the Republican Party’s 2028 presidential nominee. Romney described Vance as smart, articulate, and aligned with the MAGA movement, which he called the dominant force in the Republican Party.

Romney, a longtime critic of Trump and Vance, said he has worked with Vance in the Senate despite their differences. He added that both parties must reconsider their messaging to attract swing voters in future elections.

Reflecting on his legacy, Romney, 77, called his contributions a “footnote” in history but hoped his family remembers him as principled and patriotic. Announcing his retirement earlier, he urged bipartisanship to bridge political divides. Romney also expressed cautious optimism for President-elect Trump’s upcoming term, suggesting he be given a chance to fulfill campaign promises.

Romney previously served as Massachusetts governor and was the GOP’s 2012 presidential candidate.
