Scientists and health organizations rushed to preserve federal public health data last week after reports surfaced that the Trump administration planned to remove agency websites. Many transferred data to personal sites or Substack accounts, while others are still organizing the information.

“The deletion of information or just the threat of it should make us uneasy,” said Candace St. John of AltCDC, a group working to protect public health data.

Following executive orders against “gender ideology” and diversity efforts, federal health agencies removed over 80,000 web pages, including CDC guidance on HIV, STIs, birth control, and gender-affirming care. Some data, like the CDC’s Atlas Tool, have been restored but are less comprehensive.

Health professionals fear losing access to vital information. “The CDC was the gold standard,” said urgent care nurse Justin Gill. Experts warn that restricting public health data could hinder responses to emerging health crises like bird flu.
