Donald Trump‘s “big, beautiful bill” faces growing resistance from within the GOP, as concerns mount over its potential to add up to $5 trillion to the national debt. While House Speaker Mike Johnson remains optimistic, dismissing the Congressional Budget Office’s projections as based on “anemic economic growth,” several Republican senators aren’t convinced.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) criticized the bill’s $5 trillion debt ceiling hike, saying the math “doesn’t really add up.” Billionaire Elon Musk, recently departed from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), quipped that a bill can be “big” or “beautiful,” but “not both.”
Supporters point to promised tax extensions, border funding, and military boosts, along with DOGE-driven cuts, as offsetting new spending. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claims tariff revenue is being underestimated, while OMB Director Russ Vought argues the bill will reduce the deficit by $1.4 trillion.
Still, public backlash is growing, especially over Medicaid and SNAP changes. With only a few GOP defections needed to sink the bill, Senate passage remains uncertain ahead of the July 4 deadline.
