WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Republicans blocked a Democratic attempt Thursday to advance a measure limiting President Donald Trump’s authority to conduct military operations in Iran during a brief pro forma session.
Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.) sought to pass the resolution by unanimous consent, but Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), presiding over the session, gaveled the chamber out before recognizing him. Several Democrats present voiced objections, calling for a vote on the issue.
The resolution, led by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), aims to require congressional approval for continued U.S. military action involving Iran. While the maneuver was not expected to succeed during the short session, it signals a broader push by Democrats to challenge Trump’s handling of the conflict and recent ceasefire agreement.
Democratic lawmakers also criticized comments from Trump earlier this week regarding Iran, urging congressional leadership to reconvene and address presidential war powers.
Similar legislation failed in the House in March, though shifting support among some lawmakers could affect future votes. Senate Democrats have indicated they will also revisit the issue.
