A member of the Republican National Committee (RNC), Henry Barbour from Mississippi, is advocating for the organization to remain neutral and refrain from covering Donald Trump’s legal expenses until he is officially the Republican nominee. Barbour is circulating two draft resolutions ahead of the RNC’s March meeting in Houston, aiming to establish guidelines that prevent the RNC from showing favoritism during the presidential primary and from using its funds to pay for any candidate’s legal bills.
This initiative responds to Trump’s recent demands for changes in the RNC leadership, including the appointment of his senior campaign adviser and his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, to key positions. While Lara Trump suggested that GOP voters might support the RNC paying for Trump’s legal costs, Chris LaCivita, Trump’s chosen candidate for the party’s COO, clarified that the RNC would not cover these expenses.
Barbour’s first resolution advocates for the RNC’s impartiality throughout the primary process and restricts the hiring of staff from active campaign teams until a nominee is determined. The second resolution aims to focus RNC expenditures on election-related activities, excluding legal fees for any federal or state office candidate.
The move to halt the payment of Trump’s legal bills aligns with RNC Chairperson Ronna McDaniel’s statement from November 2022, indicating the organization would cease payments once Trump entered the 2024 presidential race. Trump, facing significant legal challenges, has accumulated legal debts exceeding half a billion dollars.
Nikki Haley, Trump’s principal opponent in the GOP primary, emphasized the importance of the RNC’s leadership focusing on the broader interests of the Republican Party rather than individual agendas.
