Republicans are proposing major cuts to Medicaid to help fund President Donald Trump’s budget priorities, including tax cuts, border security, and defense spending. However, the move could have significant consequences in Republican-led states, where Medicaid provides health coverage for millions.
The House GOP budget, backed by Trump, includes up to $880 billion in Medicaid cuts. While lawmakers have not detailed the full scope, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) suggested imposing work requirements to limit eligibility. “Work is good for you,” Johnson said, signaling a push to restrict benefits for those who cannot prove employment.
States with high Medicaid enrollment—such as West Virginia, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Arkansas—could be hit hardest. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) expressed concerns about the impact on her state, where Medicaid covers a quarter of adults. Other Republicans, like Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), have also voiced reservations.
Democrats have vowed to fight the cuts, warning they will be a major issue in the 2026 midterms.
